brain contusion
A head injury of sufficient force to bruise the brain. The bruising of the brain will often involve the surface of the brain and cause an extravasation of blood without rupture of the pia-arachnoid. Often associated with a concussion.

cerebral contusion
A bruise to the brain resulting from a head injury. May be visualised on a CT scan of the head.

myocardial contusion
A bruise to the heart muscle, usually caused by a blunt force applied to the anterior thorax (motor vehicle accident). Commonly seen in association with a rib or sternum fracture. Complications include cardiac arrhythmias and death.

scalp contusion
A bruise to the scalp with no internal damage. Features include scalp swelling (scalp haematoma) and tenderness that is often difficult to distinguish from skull fracture.
