haematoma
<haematology, pathology> A localised collection of blood, usually clotted, in an organ, space or tissue, due to a break in the wall of a blood vessel.
(18 Nov 1997)
haematoma, epidural
Accumulation of blood in the epidural space, due to damage to the middle meningeal artery and producing compression of the dura mater and thus compression of the brain. Unless evacuated, it may result in herniation through the tentorium, and death.
(12 Dec 1998)
haematoma, subdural
Accumulation of blood in the subdural space. There are acute and chronic forms. They are usually the result of trauma.

cerebral haematoma
A blood clot in the brain.

communicating haematoma
1. A cavity due to ruptured myocardial infarction that has been contained by an intact parietal pericardium and communicates with the left ventricle by a narrow neck, 2. A dilation of an artery with actual disruption of one or more layers of its walls, as at the site of puncture as a complication of precutaneous arterial catheterization, rather than with expansion of all layers of the wall.
Synonym: communicating haematoma, pulsatile haematoma.
(05 Mar 2000)
corpus luteum haematoma
A haematoma with a lining formed by the thinned-out bright yellow lutein zone; gradual resorption of the blood elements leaves a cavity filled with a clear fluid, i.e., a corpus luteum cyst.
Synonym: corpus luteum haematoma.
(05 Mar 2000)
scalp haematoma
<surgery> A collection of blood in the soft tissues adjacent the skull. A frequent finding in those with a scalp contusion.
(06 Mar 1998)
pulsatile haematoma
Synonym: communicating haematoma, pulsatile haematoma.

subconjunctival haematoma
<ophthalmology> A collection of blood under the conjunctival membrane in the eye. Often the result of blunt trauma to the eye.
(06 Mar 1998)
subdural haematoma
<neurology, surgery> A serious type of head injury characterised by a collection of blood under the dura mater adjacent to the brain. Acute subdural haematomas are a surgical emergency that usually result from head trauma.
(06 Mar 1998)
subgaleal haematoma
<radiology> Blood in subgaleal (subaponeurotic) space of scalp, crosses calvarial sutures, extends over much larger area than caput succedaneum Cf: cephalohematoma
(12 Dec 1998)
subungual haematoma
<dermatology, surgery> A collection of blood under the fingernail, often the result of blunt trauma to the nail.
(06 Mar 1998)
intracranial haematoma
See: intracranial haemorrhage.
Intramural haematoma, a haematoma in the wall of a structure, such as the bowel or bladder, usually resulting from trauma.
(05 Mar 2000)
epidural haematoma
A serious type of head injury that is characterised by a collection of blood that lies outside of the dura mater (between the dura mater and the skull). Occurs secondary to major head trauma. The most common location on the skull for this type of injury is over the temple. The temporal bone when fractured can cause a tearing of an epidural blood artery. The progressive accumulation of blood (haematoma) in the epidural space leads to the development of neurologic symptoms and coma.
Treatment includes surgical evacuation of the haematoma.
