|---|---|
hydropathy |
The water cure; a mode of treating diseases by the copious and frequent use of pure water, both internally and externally. Origin: Hydro-, 1 + Gr, to suffer. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
hydropathy plot |
<chemistry, investigation> A graph which shows how hydrophobic each amino acid in a polypeptide is versus where it is located on the polypeptide. The hydropathy plot is used to find clusters of hydrophobic amino acids, which could indicate that the polypeptide in question is a transmembrane protein. A transmembrane protein has hydrophilic parts which protrude out on either side of the cellular membrane, and a hydrophobic centre which lies within the membrane. (09 Oct 1997) |
hydropenia |
Reduction or deprivation of water. Origin: hydro-+ G. Penia, poverty (05 Mar 2000) |

<chemical> Made transparent by immersion in water. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
hydrophid |
<zoology> Any sea snake of the genus Hydrophys and allied genera. These snakes are venomous, live upon fishes, and have a flattened tail for swimming. Origin: Hydro-, 1 + Gr. A small serpent. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

hydrogen
|
A hydrogen car is an automobile which uses hydrogen (usually obtained from decomposition of methane, and sometimes from water using electrolysis) as its primary source of power for locomotion. The main benefit of using pure hydrogen as a power source is that it uses oxygen from the air to produce only water vapor as exhaust, moving the source of atmospheric pollution from many cars back to a single power plant, where it can be more easily dealt with. ...
