(Gr. spider-like) Mater: The middle of the three meninges enclosing the brain and spinal cord. It is a thin, translucent membrane closely adherent to the dura mater. Trabeculae extend from its inner surface across the subarachnoid spa ce to the pia. Also forms the outer membrane of the leptomeninges.

arachnoid villi
Microscopic tufts of pia-arachnoid mater that pierce the dura and open into venous sinuses, lacunae or extradural veins. They permit unidirectional flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the subarachnoid space to the venous system.
