Retrieval in CBR serves to improve the efficiency of the whole system by allowing for crude (and computationally less expensive) comparison of a new case against the ones stored in the case-base. The result is the search space considerably reduced in size. Finer (and costlier) comparison is then performed against the retrieved cases.
