a compound that prevents the hydrolysis of acetylcholine by acetylcholinesterase, permitting high levels of acetylcholine to accumulate at reactive sites. Some are used as drugs, some are insecticides, and certain potent ones are nerve gases that can be deadly to humans or other animals. Called also anticholinesterase.
